Hi there — we're so glad you found us!

We’re Bobby and Tanya Lewis, and we have the incredible honor of leading First Church here in Portsmouth, VA. Thanks for taking a moment to get to know us a little better.

 

Our story started over 30 years ago in Jackson, Mississippi, when we began this adventure called life together. Since then, we’ve had the privilege of serving in all kinds of ministry roles—Sunday School teachers, youth pastors, worship leaders, assistant pastors, lead pastors, and evangelists. We've planted churches across the U.S. and even served as missionaries in Germany and Ireland.

 

Through it all, our favorite adventure has been raising our two amazing kids, Robyne and Sawyer. Now, we're enjoying a new season as grandparents—and Tanya fully embraces her role as “Yoda” to the grandkids.

 

We’re passionate about what we do. I (Bobby) love teaching Bible studies and helping people grow into the leaders God’s called them to be. Tanya’s heart beats for worship—training musicians and singers, leading others into God's presence, and mentoring worship teams.

We also love being outdoors. Hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing—you name it. If we can do it outside (especially in Alaska!), we’re all in.

 

In February 2025, God called us to Portsmouth, and we couldn’t be more grateful to be part of what He’s doing here at First Church. This is a church full of loving people, and we truly believe it’s the best place to grow in faith and find community.

 

More than anything, our heart is to help people experience a real, life-changing relationship with Jesus—one person, one conversation, one relationship at a time.
